This very large spruce root water tight basket was made in Sitka, Alaska by a Thlingit Indian woman. The dark brown color indicates use and age. It was purchased in a spruce root basket collection in Sitka by Mr. Keller in 1906. The collection was taken to Skagway and placed in Mr. Kellers gift shop. This collection of baskets is thought to be one owned by Mr. Alexander M. Archangelski, a resident of Sitka in the early 1900's. This water basket was purchased at Keller's Gift Shop in Skagway, Alaska May 1966. | |
