722 This covered spruce root basket was made at Haines, Alaska in 1929 by a Thlingit Indian woman (name unknown). The orange colored grass in the design is reputed to be native dye, though the source is unknown. It was first owned by Miss Ruth Green, a teacher at S.J.S. in 1928-30. Then owned by Lila Brougher, also a teacher at S.J.S.

723 This covered basket resembles those made of spruce roots by Thlingit Indians of S.E. Alaska, though it does not have the smooth finish of spruce roots. The grass pattern is entirely on the outside, just as the Thlingit weave their patterns so it may have been copied. The design resembles that of "worm tread" of Thlingit origin. Maker, date, origin unknown. Purchased in Sitka, Alaska in 1948.

724 This unusual spruce root basket, woven in the shape of an iron kettle with legs, was made in Sitka about 1920 by a Sitka Thlingit Indian woman (name unknown). In 1955 it was obtained from Mrs. W.W. Knight (Marie) by Lila Berg.

725 This small covered spruce root basket was made by a Thlingit Indian woman at Angoon, Alaska about 1920. Name of weaver unknown. Obtained by Lila Brougher, teacher at S.J.S., March 1929.

726 This covered spruce root basket was made by Mrs. Lilly H. John (former Mrs. Willis Hoolis), a Sitka Thlingit Indian woman, about 1930. It was given to Mrs. E. W. Coulson (Nellie), sister of Lila Berg, by Mrs. John in 1950. In 1956 it was presented to Lila Berg for her collection.

727 This unusual covered spruce root basket was made at Angoon, Alaska in 1932 by a Thlingit Indian woman (name unknown). The "ALASKA BASKET" is woven in maidenhair fern stems. The red arrow of the main pattern is colored with a concentrated uric acid; the white is the natural grass color and the bit of yellow from a weak hemlock bark solution. The black roots under the pattern are spruce roots dyed with blueberry juice. The rattle in the lid - stones from a grouse's crop. Purchased by 1932 by nurse L. Brougher.

728 This old and unusual covered spruce root basket was made in S.E. Alaska by a Thlingit Indian woman (name unknown) about 1880. It was from the basket collection of Mrs. W.P. Mills and was purchased from her by Lila Berg in 1949.

729 This old spruce root basket was purchased at a rummage sale in Portland, Oregon in 1963. The weaver, time, place, materials are unknown, but we estimate, because of the color of the roots, that it is over 100 years old. The lid, having a different design, could have belonged to another basket. There is evidence of a woven handle on the basket. Native dyes were used in the pattern.

730 This lovely covered spruce root basket was made by a Thlingit Indian woman of S.E. Alaska. Note the unusual design of salmonberries on the cover top. Purchased at Pruell’s Jewelry Store in Ketchikan by Mrs. L.C. Berg in 1947.

731 This covered spruce root basket was made in 1956 by Mrs. Alex Andrews (Annie), a Sitka Thlingit Indian woman. This pattern was copied from a basket owned by Mrs. Caroline Yaw of Sitka, Alaska. Buckshot rattles in lid. Purchased in 1956 by Lila Berg.
