Strix nebulosa is the scientific name for the great gray owl. It's the largest of all owls, 24-33 inches.

The great gray owl is brownish gray and earless, with yellow eyes, long tail and circular facial disks. It is usually best looked for in winter. In some years the great gray Owt invades eastern Canada and the Western United States in large numbers.

Its call is a deliberate, lazy series of deep hoots, dropping in pitch and slowing in cadence at the end. Low pitched notes are audible only at close range.

The similar species are the Barred and Spotted owls. They are large and earless.
