The Sharp shinned hawk has long narrow legs, short rounded wings and a long tail. The tail has four straight dark bands. The color of the adult is dark bluegray, white, yelloworange to deep red. The young hawks are mainly light brown.

Other hawks are bigger than the Sharp shinned hawk.

Their breeding range is up to the tree line in Alaska and Canada. In the winter, from British Colombia and Northern U.S., south to Panama, the Gulf Coast and the Bahamas.
