:

Short-eared owls occur in open areas. They occur on every continent except Australia. When hunting. they fly low, shifting back and forth on long wings with an easy beat. Short-eared owls prey on small rodents and other creatures such as insects and small birds.

They are 13 to 17 inches long, and are a medium size bird with long wings that extend well beyond the tail.

They are generally silent except in breeding season. Their song is a soft "toot-toot."

They breed on tundra from north-western Alaska across Arctic Canada to Newfoundland. In winter they go south to southern California, Texas, and Florida.
