The Seal Hunt

The red sun rose from the east above the snowy white mountains in the village of Kwiknek. The village was a small one located at the mouth of the river located under the great Crow mountains.

A young man named Crene awoke one morning in his damp cold house. He got up from his hard wooden bed and lit his old rusty stove. He ate his breakfast and chopped some wood. The nice morning made him want to go hunting on the ocean to get some seals.

After chopping wood he got ready and packed his gear. He went to get gasoline from the local store. Then he put everything into his boat and started off.

Crene was headed for a small sand island about four miles from the village. As he entered the sea he knew there would be a lot of seals because a red mirror reflection of the sea meant he would be able to see the seals easily.

When he reached the island he parked his boat and got it ready to go just in case he saw a seal. Fifteen minutes passed till he saw his first seal. Quickly he jumped into the boat and went after it! It dived. Then as it surfaced again, he shot it. A perfect hit! Then he went over to it and harpooned it. When he hauled the seal out of the water and into his boat he saw it was a bearded seal, and a big one too. He figured it would be enough and started home.

Halfway home though he ran out of gas. He did not know why since he left with a full tank, but when he opened the engine cover he saw the tubes from the tank were leaking badly.

The ebbing tide was pulling him away from his village but being a smart man he threw the anchor out and that stopped him. He then waited and just enjoyed the beautiful day. Soon the tide came in again and he drifted back into the village with his seal.
