Piciatun Pissuutuli by Elizabeth Kasayuli:Piciatun Pissuutuli
A long time ago there was a man who used to like to go hunting for different kinds of sea mammals. He used to go seal hunting a lot during the summertime out on the ocean in a qayaq. When he went he took along a .22 rifle and a harpoon. By the time he came home he had usually caught either a hair seal or a maklak seal. Sometimes when he didn't catch any seals, he would bring home sea birds that swim out on the ocean. Because it was hard in the winter he never went seal hunting then. When spring came though he took his low sled, without dogs to pull it, and he would go back out to the ocean. Fastened to his low sled was his gayaq. Then he would put his qayaq into the water and go seal hunting. Sometimes he would come back home without catching anything, but occasionally he would be lucky and bring home a hair seal, spotted seal, or a maklak. During the fall though he never used to catch maklaks. When the sea ice thawed and moved out he used to go to his spring camp. And when the herring fish came, he and his family fished for them, collected herring eggs, dug for clams and mussels, and hunted for sea animals too.. That is what they did every year. In the spring he ate from the ocean. In the summer he ate tomcod, king salmon, dog salmon and devilfish. He got all of these from the ocean, including clams. When winter came again he and his family used the ocean, as always, to get foods like sea birds, hair seals, spotted seals, and sometimes maklaks. That's the way he used to live in this area, hunting and fishing to survive, and supporting his family and others to keep them fed in this manner. Story told by: Elizabeth Kasayuli
