"One day I went into either Steven's Slough or Reindeer Slough with Steven Andrew (Stip), Archie Minock and Gabe Heckman. We saw a little black bear in there and chased it for about five minutes, then left. A while later when we took another boat ride through the same slough we saw the same bear and wounded it. It climbed a quarter of the ways up a tree, and with the five shells Gabe and I had left we knocked it out of the tree. Then I ran over to it and killed it with my last shell. Archie and Stip came over and helped me butcher it and carry it back to the boat.

On our way home we came across Bazil Zacharoff and his family, and we gave them a piece of meat. Then we bumped into Evan Nick and his family and gave them the heart. They asked for a leg, but we hadn't cut it up yet. He asked if he could take the leg when it was cut up. When we got to Pilot we gave four pieces of meat to Ray Fancyboy and one side of the ribs to George Heckman. We also gave a big chunk of meat to Charlie Heckman, and then we put three legs and the other ribs into the freezer."
