Fourth of July Tournament by Nastasia Sergie:Fourth of July Tournament
This summer was pretty boring because every day I did the same thing. I babysat for my brother Vassily and my sister Palassa, and I hung out with my friends. Once in awhile, though, I went out on boat rides with Beverly and Everett. The most exciting part of my summer was the 4th of July weekend, because the Ameri Corps sponsored a basketball tournament here in Marshall. The teams that were in the tournament were Russian Mission/Aniak, Marshall, Pilot Station, and St. Mary's. There were more teams from other villages who were supposed to be there, but they didn't make it. The tournament started on the second of July, and they played through the third. It would have lasted through the fourth, but commercial fishing started and the men had to participate in that. So the following weekend they finished the tournament. After the tournament I went to a youth camp at Acuilnguq for three days that was held by the Russian Orthodox Church. They usually have it at Ohagmiut, but this year they wanted to have it in a different place so that people from other villages could go too. As it turned out, only Marshall and Pilot Station went. They weren't expecting too many people this year, anyway, because it was the first year they had it there. We didn't do very much for activities, but we had a couple of religion classes, went on a nature walk, and sat around camp and visited. One of the reasons we did so little was because the men were building cabins and making more space for next year's camp. It also rained a lot and we couldn't go anywhere. We came back after three days, and I went back to my same old routine of babysitting and hanging out with my friends. Nastasia Sergie | |
