Berry Picking Frenzy by Lorraine E. Fitka:Berry Picking Frenzy
"I didn't really travel to a lot of places this summer because I wasn't asked to go with anyone. So, I stayed home most of the time doing house work. When I wasn't home doing house work I was picking berries on the tundra behind Marshall. One day my granddaughter Bupsie and I walked up to the tundra on the other side of the new airport road to pick berries. Nus Turet was up there, so we picked berries with her. While we were busy picking berries Bupsie said that she saw little black puppies run into the trees. I told her to stay close to me for the rest of the day. Nus didn't know about the puppies and she started to pick berries around the area where Bupsie saw the puppies. A little while later we heard her scream. When we looked at her we saw the puppies following a big black wolf into the trees. Nus said that they were sneaking up on her. After that we left the tundra. In early August Bupsie and I traveled to Tuntutuliak and stayed for more or less a week. My son John invited me and Bupsie over to pick salmon berries. From Tuntutuliak we traveled by boat on the Kuskokwim River to pick the berries. While there I picked about six gallons of salmon berries. Bupsie helped me fill a five gallon bucket and I filled half a two gallon bucket by myself. I didn't cut fish this summer because my daughter Gloria was using my kerraaq (fish house). I didn't want to use it later because it got stinky and dirty." By: Lorraine E. Fitka | |
