Running Aground

I didn't do much this summer. But I did spend some time getting the fishhouse ready for cutting fish, and I cut a lot of fish. Most of the time, though, it seemed like I was going back and forth to put wood in the fishhouse so the fish could have a good smoke. I also sewed and cooked and cleaned, and I sometimes went over to the sandbar to watch the kids while they swam.

And, of course, when berry picking season came along, I picked a lot of berries. Once we went camping to pick salmonberries, but for blueberries we just went out for the day to pick them. I remember one time when I went out in the boat to go blueberry picking with my sister, Ruth. She was driving and we were both talking away and not paying any attention to the river when, all of a sudden, we ran over a sandbar and got stuck. We were so surprised! Loretta and I had to get out of the boat and push it until the water got too deep for our rubber boots. The next time she brought us out berry picking, she drove the boat really slow.
