My Gram's Berry Picking Trip:My Gram's Berry Picking
Trip
This summer all my gram did was cut fish and pick berries for the winter. It was in July when my gram went out salmonberry picking across from Pilot Station in Cuqartalek Slough with my uncle Charlie Fancyboy from Pilot Station. She said it took them about six hours to get there by boat. When they landed they took out their camping gear and put up the tent and a tarp inside the tent to keep the floor dry. She said when they first got there she picked about a half gallon of berries so she wouldn't have to pick lots in the morning. Then the next day she picked about six gallons of salmonberries. After she was done picking salmonberries she picked about three gallons of blueberries. That was enough of those berries for the winter, she said, so they came home around six o'clock in the evening. Then about a month later she and her daughter, Agnes, went out berry picking again, right by the airport in Pilot Station. She said she picked six gallons of cranberries and blackberries.
