Kathy's Spring Camp:Kathy's Spring
Camp
At the end of May Kathy Peteroff decided to go out spring camping, and I was the man to take her out. We accompanied Kathy's niece Fran Evan to a place called Big B where we camped and hunted for muskrats, ducks, and eggs. Kathy had some fun watching the kids and older boys hunt. She says the main reason she likes spring camping is because she enjoys time away from the pressures and noise of town. Her favorite thing is to look for certain tasty kinds of eggs, such as swan, tern, and seagull. Kathy said the trip was good except for all the rain while she was out on the tundra. Kathy and her family camped for three days and two nights, one night at Big B and the other in the main part of Takchak Slough. The first night they camped because the older people wanted to get out on the tundra early the next day and look for eggs. She and the others camped on a tundra island to make sure that a bear wouldn't bother them while they slept. It was an island only because the water was high. It was normally a part of the mainland. That night the older boys went out with the boat to hunt for muskrats and beavers. Back at camp Kathy said there was a lot of wildlife swimming around. The next and last night of her trip was spent in a cabin located on the main part of Takchak Slough. The cabin belongs to Paul Coffee and is used for hunting. It has some lakes behind it that have a lot muskrats. All through the evening the boys would walk back to the lakes and hunt muskrats with a canoe. During the night while Kathy was trying to sleep, mice made all kinds of noise and kept her awake. The next day Kathy and her family packed up and left. She was happy to be leaving because she was tired and missed the comforts of home. But while she was out she enjoyed every minute of it (except the mice) Story by: Kathy Peteroff Interviewed by Ben Peteroff | |
