Fran's Last Fishing Trip

"On August 21st I went on the last fishing trip with my fishing permit. Next year and the years after the permit goes to Garrett, if he graduates from high school.

Well, we almost overslept because I forgot to set the clock but my nephew Morris came to the rescue. He woke us up at 3:35 A.M. and we left at 9:00 A.M.

We fished for Chum and Coho salmon for four hours and averaged 30 minutes a drift. Our first drift was our best drift, and we caught about 3/4 of a tote. Then the run died down as it always does every opening because of all the fishermen on the Yukon. For the four hours that we fished we only caught about two totes of fish, one tote of Chum and 3/4 tote of Coho. Right after our last drift Ben Peteroff and David Evan stopped by us and we told Ben we would take him and his fish down to the fish processor. Then we left to deliver the fish to Boreal Fish Processors which is located about 1/2 a mile below Pitkas Point. On our way down we stopped by Alex Evan's boat and asked him what he was going to do. Then we stopped by Charlie Evan's boat and asked him what he was going to do. Charlie said he was going to go home because he didn't have enough fish. He also had motor problems, so he gave us some fish and some to Alex.

While going down to Boreal the river got rough below St. Mary's, and we had to go through some choppy water. At Boreal we waited about an hour to unload our fish because we didn't have a long line. After we sold our fish we went to St. Mary's to buy some things at the stores there. First we went to Yukon Traders to pick up the mop I forgot earlier this summer. The store clerk taped the mop to my hand as a joke. After that we went to the other store where I picked up some other things. Then we left for home where we arrived around midnight.

That was my last commercial fishing trip.
