The Bear

The exciting part of my summer was when I saw a bear and it got shot. Robert, Paula and I went bear hunting in Owl Slough. We went three bends in and then went into a small clearwater slough. When we went into the slough we saw seven baby ducks and their mother. At that time Paula was asleep so I ran over to her and woke her up and told her to look at the baby ducks. Then she told us to try and catch one of them with the boat. So we started to chase them with the boat. We chased after only one that was far away from its mother. It took us about an hour to chase it. When we finally caught the baby duck Paula was very happy and stayed very close to it and held it. She even asked me to hold it. Then we went on deeper into the slough. When we were all the way at the end of the slough and we hadn't seen anything, we turned around and started to go out. Then Robert saw a Black bear up ahead sitting down on the bank. I asked him where it was and he said it was up ahead of us. When I looked at it, it was running up the bank. Then Robert shot his .338 rifle, and at first I thought he had missed it. But when we started to back up with the boat, I saw it lieing on the ground. It was on its side struggling to get away. We watched it die very slowly.

Where Robert shot the bear the bullet came out by the eye and made a big hole. Even the bear's brain started to come out of its head.

After the bear died I got out to hold the boat, even though I didn't want to. Robert then went over to the bear and carried it back to the boat. After he put it into the boat we started for home.

When we got home Robert looked for Matthew to help him skin the bear. Paula and I brought the baby duck to her grandmother's house to show her cousins. They got scared so we had to let the baby duck go.

Then Robert came back with Matthew and they went down to the beach and skinned the bear before it got too dark. A lot of people came around to see it. Then everyone went home. That was a fun evening.
