Summer Fun Vacation
(Tina Marie Papp)

"This year I spent my summer here in Marshall. I started my summer off by working at the Fortuna Ledge Coop store. I worked there as a clerk on weekdays, but I quit after a while. When I wasn't working, I stayed home most of the day. I would walk around during the evenings with my friends or stay home and watch movies. I stayed with my friends, Sally, Rena, Norma, and other good friends of mine here in Marshall. Then I went back to work at the store again where I worked on weekends. When commercial fishing came around I wanted to commercial fish for the money I needed for college. But I couldn't commercial fish so I decided to work with the fish company which worked with Mas. Inc here in Marshall."

"After I filled out some papers, the next day I went downriver to work near Emmonak for a company named Shenk. I worked there as a fish gutter and shiner which was fun sometimes. Sally Duny and I were the only people from Marshall who signed up for the job. I hoped more people would join us but they seemed to have less interest in that job. Plus it was miles away from home. I quit a month later because the company did something wrong which was embarrassing to me. I came home on one of their barges which took a day or so. It was slow and boring. I stayed home for awhile with Marlene while my mom was at fish camp. I worked on my career all summer which made me worry sometimes because once I got this letter from A.V.C.P. telling me I was not eligible for this year's scholarship or grant because the deadline ended in January of 1992. But I ended up working something out with them."

"This summer I stayed with my friend Crimet which was fun and exciting. We would go to the sandbar when the sun started shining. I swam a lot this summer plus took sun baths also. I traveled to other villages like Russian Mission and Mtn. Village to see what was going on just for the fun of it. I also went to Anchorage for a week for the fun of it, and it was a lot of fun. I saw some of my friends there which was exciting for me. I t was fun staying with Crimet and Tom while they were here in Marshall for two weeks. But it was sad to see them go with all the fun they gave me. Then it was time to get ready to go to Honolulu, Hawaii for school. After staying with my friends and family for awhile, I took off for Hawaii."
