A Summer Vacation To Remember

by Gary Kameroff

On the third day of May, 1992, my first day of my summer vacation began. I was just getting out of a fun and exciting school year at Mt. Edgecumbe High School. On that day I boarded a 737 Alaska Airlines Flight into Anchorage. At Anchorage, my younger sister and I contacted my older sister Janice who came to pick me up from the airport. We stayed at my sister Janice's place for two nights and three days.

The day I got there I went out to Fireweed Theater to meet my girlfriend. We saw the movie K-2 and it wasn't that bad a movie. After the movie, we took a cab to the Westmark Inn near downtown Anchorage to meet some people and check out the Senior Bash. No one showed up though, so we took separate cabs back to where we stayed.

The second day I slept in, then went out to the University Mall. We

shopped there a while and ate pizza at the Round Table Pizza. That night I stayed home and watched movies.

After a couple days of fun, we went home to Marshall. As soon as I got there it was cold and it felt very lifeless. The next day it was a little more exciting though, because I went out on a hunting trip with my uncle David. A few weeks later I went on another hunting trip with Charlie T. and James Edison. We took off upriver by snow machine for Ingrihak. Just below our fishcamp, approximately eight miles upriver from Marshall, we tried crossing a creek, but we didn't make it across. The ice beneath couldn't hold the weight of the snow machine and the the track spun and we started to sink. Two seconds later, the water passed over my knee boots and I jumped off the snow machine. I grabbed onto some ice and got up. When I looked back, the snow machine and sled were already under water along with the shotguns and gear. Charlie swam for shore and made it. James then zoomed across the ice and water and got me. A few minutes later we were laughing and making a fire to dry up.

Later the next month in June I began commercial fishing with my dad and started earning some money. The fishing season this summer was short, but we still made a lot of money during the short fishing periods. All summer I tried to keep myself occupied, taking boat rides, swimming and going on camping trips. Then all too soon school started.
