Clara Shorty's Summer

When I asked Clara Shorty about her summer she said,"lt was good." She got to put away more dried fish than last year. Clara and Bernice Fedusia (her mother -in- law) made strips, dried fish, and salt fish. This year was Clara's fIrst time making salt fish and she is very pleased with herself. All together Clara and Bernice put away two or three six gallon buckets of dried fish they cut up for the long cold winter.

Clara, her husband, and kids went out drifting in the main Yukon river for the fish they needed. Clara said they mostly caught chums. Just once they went out with Clara's husband to do subsistence fishing.

When I asked Clara if she did any traveling this summer, she said she and her family went to St. Mary's for a couple of nights and had fun driving around with one of her friends.

Around here she said she went out berry picking twice up the hill and over at Willow Slough. She and her family also went out for a boat ride up the river. And once they went to Polty's island for a picnic and swimming. While they were there the family played "Lap Game" and when they were done and going home she remembered she left her tennis shoes on the island.

After she had finished up with her story, I asked her what was the most fun she had this summer, and she told me, "birthday parties." All the birthdays were in June. Her's was in June too. For her birthday she just lounged around.

The most boring thing she did was her housework.

Thank you Clara for letting me interview you.
