The White Out:The White Out
Last year when Tern and Bill Manumik went on a fishing trip to Kuyukutuk, behind Pilcher Mtn., they got trapped in a white out. "When we left from Marshall, it was very calm and clear. When we went back there and started fishing, it was good. Then we decided to go check another fishing spot. We took off and then it started getting white out. We went for a little while then we stopped. It was Bill's first time out there and he didn't know the country very well, so I told him, "As long as I could see Pilcher, I'll know where we are." We decided to stay and wait out the storm. After about an hour, we decided to go check the other fishing spot. When we passed the little bend, Bill said, "Look at that moose!" I said, "No, that's someone fishing!" So we went to check who that was. It turned out to be John Tikiun Sr. We were very happy to see him! Then we all waited until it cleared up a little before we left. As he was leading us home, he took us all over the country. But we followed him anyway because we were scared that if we didn't follow him, we would get lost." By: Terri Manumik Interviewed by: Gerilyn Fitka ![]() | |
