Alvin's Scary Hunting Trip

One fall day Alvin Owletuck Sr. and Morris Teganlakla went out moose hunting upriver. They decided to go up to 12 Mile Slough and camp there a few days or until they caught a moose. The trip was good from here up to Tucker's Slough where they both decided to check and see if there were any moose.

When they got to the other end of Tucker's Slough they noticed there was a very strong south wind. The Yukon was rough, but from where they were at the waves didn't look that big. They were traveling in a small boat with a 40 horse outboard engine. Morris thought it would be better to go across to the other side and then head up to 12 Mile. But out on the Yukon the wind was blowing at least 40 mph and the water was really rough.

As they got out to the middle of the Yukon the waves started picking up even more. Their boat was filling up with water and Alvin had to bail as fast as he could with a five gallon bucket while they made their way to the south side of the Yukon.

When they finally got to the other side where it was a lot calmer they found a place to stop. Alvin then bailed out the rest of the water that was in the boat. After that he and Morris made a fire and dried out their camping gear. The only thing that wasn't wet was grub which was in a grub box. After drying themselves and their gear out, they headed up towards 12 Mile Slough.
