A Fun Slide

"One spring in 1976, my father, Jacob Evan, and I went out ice fishing. We traveled over to Kuyukutaq with his little jalopy Elan, and we went fishing in several different spots there. That evening we came back over the base of the mountain, but just as we reached the top we ran out of gas. Then my dad told me to hop in the sled and we slid from the top of the mountain to the bottom about one and a half miles. That was a lot of fun! Then we walked over to the little slough by the first bluffs called Kuktullaq and we slid another forty feet or so. Then we walked to the Yukon and up towards Marshall. As we were walking along the snowmachine trail a dog team caught up to us. It was Andrew Shorty and he offered us a ride the rest of the way to Marshall. We were lucky the weather was sunny and not too warm or cold and the days were long."

A Big Wheelie

"In February, 1986, Fred Smart and I took off to St. Mary's on Alex Evan's old three wheeler. When we reached Herman George's fish camp we did a big wheelie on the ice and the engine stopped dead! It didn't start even though Fred kept pulling at it, so we started walking home. While we were walking Ron Fitka caught up to us and gave me a ride home. Then someone else came along and brought Fred home. That was the end of our trip to St. Mary's."
