INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT

6 YEARS

Asks more complex questions than just "Why?" and wants detailed answers.
Concentrates on doing one activity for longer period of time.
Has improved memory.
Has better understanding of the concept of time.
Is inquisitive and eager to learn in school.
May begin to understand concept of seriation, conservation, reversibility, and multiple classification.

7 to 8 YEARS

Accepts idea of rules and accepts fact that harm might result if rules are not followed.
Understand concept of time.
Has longer attention span.
Understand value of money and may be ready for an allowance.
Favors reality; is less interest in fairy tales.
Begins to show interest in the collection of certain objects.
Likes to help teacher.
Enjoys reading animal stories and space age stories.
May show interest in stories about children of other countries.
Refines concepts of seriation, conservation, reversibility, and multiple classification.

9 to 10 YEARS

Is able to consider more than one conclusion to problems or choices.
Understands more about truth and honesty.
Likes to act in a more adult manner.
Is still enthusiastic about learning.
Likes games that involve mental competition.
Enjoys quizzing parents and impressing them with new facts.
Shows increasing capacity for self-evaluation.
Enjoys mysteries and secrets.
May show less interest in TV programs.
May continue to show interest in the collection of certain objects.
Has vocabulary of about 5400 words.
Has better use of language and is able to converse with adults.

11 to 12 YEARS

Is able to detect problems in daily situations and work out solutions.
Grasps math concept and applies them into daily activities.
May like group projects and classes based on cooperative effort.
Likes active learning - reading aloud, reciting, and science projects.
Likes to recite in front of class if self-esteem is secure.
May allow peer relationships to affect school work.
Has vocabulary of about 7200 words.
May enjoy lengthy conversations with grandparents or teachers.
May enjoy long periods of solitude to think or to work on projects like building models.
May show interest in reading; mysteries, adventure stories, and biographies are favorites.
Understands concepts of seriation, conservation, reversibility, and multiple classification.
