A New Family

Hello. My name is Jonathan Stone and this is the story of my parents' divorce. Their names are Richard and Samantha and they got a divorce when I was about eight years old.

It started one night when I heard my parents arguing downstairs. I went to watch them in a corner while they were fighting. I remember them crying and me being very scared. The next day when I woke up my father was packing to leave. I asked him where he was going and he said, "On a trip, boy, and I won't be back for a while."

After that I only heard from him a couple times a month and saw him only a few times a year. I kept thinking it was because of me that they separated. Once and awhile I would go visit him and stay the night. During those times we would do something fun like go to a movie, a fair or go fishing. When it came time for me to go home he would tell me to take care of my mom, and I tried my best. Once in awhile I would ask him why he didn't stay with us anymore and he would always find a way to change the subject. I would ask my mom the same thing but she never said anything.

One day when I was about eleven years old my mother started seeing other guys and when she brought one home to visit I got very mad. I thought that was my job because of what my dad said, to watch over her, and maybe also because of the thought of having a new father. I thought that way until my father came over to visit. He said it was all right for her to do that because he was seeing other people too. After that it didn't bother me. Some of the guys she brought over I didn't like and others were OK.

By the time I was sixteen it was all behind me. My father was already remarried to a gal by the name of Sharon, and my mother finally found a guy we both liked whose name was Mike Larry. They were going out for a year when they told me they wanted to get married. And it was OK with me. The guy had a daughter, Maxine, who was a year younger than me. I thought she would be OK as a sister because she wasn't really snobby or anything like that.

In a couple of months I would have a new family, and hopefully this one will last awhile.
