Ravens on Pilcher Mountain - Student Encounters:
Ravens on Pilcher
Mountain
On the last day of school,
sometime in May of 1994, the whole high school took a walk to the
top of Pilcher Mountain. It was a beautiful sunny day with the sun
shining in all its glory. The sound of water trickling down the
tundra was a sure sign of spring. It seemed like an endless road
to the knee of the mountain. Finally when we got there, it seemed
like only a few minutes passed until we were on the top of the
mountain.
From there we could see the Yukon
River and countless lakes and sloughs. The flat mountain top was
full of grass and rocks. It was very windy and chilly. After being
on the top of the mountain for a while, some birds started to fly
around. Sure enough, there were two eagles and four ravens flying
around. The ravens were bothering the eagles and chasing them
around. The eagles were probably in the ravens' territory and
weren't supposed to be there. Therefore the ravens were chasing
the eagles away. They moved off before we could get a better look
at the birds. After that it was only a short while until we were
back on the trail to Marshall again, which was a lot easier
because it was downhill.
