Eels Are Here - From Our Community:Eels Are
Here
"This is a story I heard of how the ravens told the people that the eels were here. It was in late October after the ice stopped moving. At that time it was very dangerous to travel. The ice was safe to walk on for at least 50 feet out. Beyond that point the water was visible. Everyone was anxiously waiting for the eels to come. Every so often a person would go down to the beach and use a stick to see if the eels were there. After days of waiting, there was no sign of eels anywhere. Then one day the ravens started flying around the river. It was windy outside and there were waves wherever water was visible. The waves were so strong they flung a few eels up on the ice. Then the ravens started circling the eels below them, diving down to try and get them. Many people saw the ravens and were very happy that the eels were here. People were then able to catch the eels before they passed by the village." Story by: Charlie Teganlakla | |
