A Talk with Raven - Original Student Folktales:
A Talk with
Raven
One day as I was minding
my own business I heard somebody talking
outside on my bedroom window. Curious, I walked over to the window
and saw a raven talking to itself. I was really amazed by the
raven, because I had never seen a raven talk before in my whole
life. Then I realized that maybe they could talk!
I was really quiet and stayed
there watching the raven talk for a long time. After 20 minutes, I
said, "Hello there raven." When it looked at me with a face of
fright, I said, "Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you." Then I
slowly reached out and picked up the raven. I sat it on the carpet
while I sat on my bed and started chatting with the raven. I asked
the raven how he got there by my bedroom window? Then he said,
"When I was flying around I hit the telephone wire and fell down
and landed on the road. I hopped to the nearest house and jumped
up on the window ledge. I'm so glad I stopped here. Now I have
someone to talk to."
We talked for a long time.
Finally I asked the raven how he learned how to talk? He had a
hard time explaining that question. He thought about it for maybe
10 minutes, then he said, "A long time ago when I was growing up,
my parents got killed by these kids with a BB gun, and after
flying around for a long time I found a talking parrot and stayed
with him. After awhile I started getting the hang of talking like
him. So that's who taught me how to talk."
I was very amazed by the raven.
But I was getting tired. When I looked at my watch it was 5:30
A.M., so I told the raven he'd better be on his way, and I let him
go out the window. I watched him take off, and as he was flying I
heard him yell back, "Take care!" I waved goodbye to the raven and
then went to bed. I wondered if I would ever see
that
raven
again?
