Mike Simon
(Mayagaleq)

Mike Simon was born at Ligyarmiut on February 22, 1902. In the spring time he or used to go to Cape Romanzoff for spring camp where he used to hunt seals. In the winter time they used to go to Qamuryaraq to stay in their mud house there, but they used to visit back and forth around the country. Their fall camp was at Culungneq.

When he heard there was a school being built in Hooper Bay he came here. He married Aldine Simon here in 1926, and they have stayed in Hooper Bay ever since then except for three years at St. Mary's and a year and a half at Scammon Bay.

During the spring of 1924 Mike Simon and Tom Tomaganuk guided the famous naturalists, Olaus Murie and Herbert Brandt, through the area while they studied and photographed the wild life here.

This winter he turned 79 years old. He still hunts and gets wood for his family. He is still a very active person.
