Housing:Housing
The first BIA government houses were built here in Marshall in the mid 1960's. But the first major ASHA (Alaska State Housing Authority) project was built here in the mid 1960's. The site of a housing project is chosen according to how sticky or soft the ground is. The cost of the houses depends on their size, but it is usually between 70,000 and 100,000 dollars. The gravel comes from the airport here in Marshall. The building materials that they use are lumber and plywood and they come from Washington State. The best kind of insulation to use is foam or fiber glass and the walls should be a minimum of 2" x 8" thick. Most houses built here so far, however, have only 2" x 4" walls with fiber glass insulation. Only a few have 2" x 6" walls. The standards that we have to follow are the State Fire Marshall's Code and the State Construction Code. Most men here in Marshall didn't go through training to build a house. They learned how to build when they were in high school and while they were on the job. There are about 23 new frame houses here in Marshall, including 9 government houses, and 14 owner-built houses. There are also 1 owner-built log cabins here.
