Richard Ellis

Village Public Safety Officer

Richard Ellis works either at the Police Department or somewhere in the community. He works for the Alaska State Troopers and AVCP. The training Ellis had was 243 hours in law enforcement, search and rescue and investigations, 40 hours in law enforcement-teaching skills, and 90 hours in fire supression. Also 40 hours in alcohol and drug investigations. He has gone through high school and two years of college, and he attended a military intelligence course.

Most of the time Ellis works with VPO William Andrew of Marshall. Normally he works 7.5 hours a day but those hours are flexible during a 30 day period. He has two bosses. One is a state trooper and the other is a superviser from AVOP. Their names are Trooper Asplunel and Jack Hopstael. He expects to work at this job until better employment opportunity arises. His regular salary is approx. $2,400 per month.

His four responsibilities are: law enforcement, search and rescue, fire supression , and emergency medical treatment. The best things about his job are putting bad guys in jail and helping people. The worst things about his job are, after helping people, they are thankless towards you and there is no community support from some people.

The advice he gives to young people who might want to do his job later is stay out of trouble, choose good role models and don't use alcohol or drugs.
