David Fitka

Water and Sewer Operator

David Fitka works at the PHS water facility for the city of Marshall. He operates the water and sewer plant. He received a certificate from the state in water treatment and distribution plus job experience. He also has a high school diploma. Most of the time David works in the pumphouse. His supervisers are the city office personnel and state inspectors. David works three hours a day during the winter and gets paid thirteen dollars an hour. He works much longer hours during the summer with much overtime.

Four of his responsibilities in the pumphouse are: to record daily water usage, monitor chlorine and flouride levels in water, maintain and repair water/sewer collection or distribution systems, and send in monthly and yearly water samples.

The best thing about his job is maintaining good water quality for a healthy community. The worst thing about his job is the sewer systems. His advice to the people who might want to do his job later is learn to use math and science skills and to stay in school.
