Clem Kameroff

Commercial Fisherman

Clem Kameroff is a commercial fisherman who fishes along the Yukon River. He is self-employed with his salary depending on the price of fish and how much is bought from the buyers. No training is necessary for his job except what he received from his family when he was young. He attended the Bethel High School.

Clem fishes about six to seven miles up the Yukon River from Marshall. He works most of the time with his wife. And he plans on working for another fifteen to twenty years. Four of his main job responsibilities include making sure his helpers have licenses, permit and ID renewal, hanging nets and having enough supplies such as gas, food and whatever else is needed to fish.

The best things about his job are hanging the nets and drifting. The worst things about his job are getting snags and ending up with a broken engine.

His advice to younger people is, "If you ever plan on fishing, listen to your elders and experienced fishermen on how to fish."
