Where Our Luck Began

"My brother John, his son Myron, and I left Marshall one sunny afternoon and headed upriver where the moose would be more plentiful. We ended up at a place called Big Bend, which is a couple of miles below Holy Cross. We arrived there late in the evening where we set up camp, filled up our empty stomachs and rested for the evening.

We spent the next seven days up there without much luck. After we saw a cow moose and her two calves, we decided to look for happier hunting grounds. We ended up downriver at a place called Devil's Elbow, located about 20 miles above Marshall. There we set up camp, had supper, then called it an evening.

When we got up the next morning, we didn't have much hope for success because it was raining. But we decided to check out the sloughs and meadows at about 1:00 o'clock that afternoon. We walked up to the edge of a meadow where my brother John came out and said that there was nothing but a stump at the other end. But I wasn't convinced and got out my binoculars and focused on the other end of the meadow. The stump turned out to be a giant bull moose. That's where our luck began and the moose's luck ended."
