The Second Shot Got It!:The Second Shot Got
It!
"This September I brought my brother Alo and my son-in-law Walter on a moose hunting trip inside Five Day Slough to a place called Gurrerpak. Along the way we saw some fresh moose tracks, so we went ashore to find the moose that made them. Alo and Walter went through the trees and started tracking the moose while I took the boat to meet them at a portage that goes to muddy lakes. When we all got together we decided to eat at the portage. When we finished eating, Walter and Alo went inside the trees again. Walter told me to go around the bend and wait for them there because the moose tracks were really fresh. I started to go around the bend very slowly with the boat when I saw some trees moving. At first, I thought it was Walter or Alo, but when I saw antlers I shot at the moose that wore them. I missed the first shot, and the moose started running, but when it got into the cottonwoods I could see it better, so the next time I shot, the moose went down. Just when we started to skin the moose, Jonathan and Patrick came by, and they helped us bring the meat down to the boat. When we got back home I filled out my moose harvest ticket and sent it in to the Department of Fish and Game. The moose antlers measured 40 some inches in width. A couple of days later when we went back to the same place where I had shot the moose there were some really big brown bear tracks. The brown bear had been eating the guts of the moose that we left behind."
