An Unexpected Catch

"In the early 1960's when snow machines first started coming out, Morris Tee asked me if I wanted to go out hunting. Morris had a new snow machine that he had to crank to start and put snow in it to cool. I had just finished making a sled, so I went with Morris Tee and Willie Fitka Sr. across to Owl Slough where it meets the Yukon.

While we were riding around we saw fresh moose tracks in the deep snow. We had to put on our snowshoes to track him. Morris and Willie followed the tracks in one direction while I went in the other direction. When I got to this pothole that was about 20-30 feet in diameter I took off my snowshoes. I lit up a cigarette and looked around, and about 20 feet away from me on the other side of a snow bank I happened to see a moose head. It belonged to a good size bull, and luckily it was facing the opposite direction from where I was sitting or it would have attacked me. The moose was paying more attention to Morris and Willie's direction. I loaded my 25-35 really quietly, then shot it below the ear. It was a perfect shot. When Morris and Willie came out of the trees, Morris shot it too. I guess he didn't know it was already dead. Then we made a little portage for the snow machine and butchered the moose. After we butchered the moose we came home and had a lot of moose meat to put away for the long winter."
