The

Flowers

Scammon

Bay

Alaska

A NOTE FROM THE TEACHER

This flower project was undertaken by the Upward Bound Class last Fall. For two classes we walked the creek and the tundra behind the village picking up flowers. After drying them, we laminated them and cut them into shapes, then made a school bulletin board of them (see photo). During this stage we also identified them.

For this binder, we simply placed the laminated flowers under plastic covers and then identified them also by Family.

Other activities were later generated by this collection project. One of them, a research project, proved especially fruitful. A film, "The Green Machine," was also shown and this led to even more curiosity about plant life and about life in general.

Although this Upward Bound enrichment activity was not necessarily meant to be a science project, there was undoubtedly much science learned from it.
