A King Salmon with Roy, but a Pike by Myself:A King Salmon with Roy, but a Pike by Myself
"The only biggest fish I caught with Roy that I can recall was a King salmon. But it was caught in a drift net during the summer. My next biggest fish was a pike fish and it was caught on a fish hook (manaq) through a hole during the winter. And I caught that fish by myself. I never measured how long they were, but I would say they were average-sized fish. My biggest fish was caught in a faster but harder way than my next biggest fish. And my second biggest fish was caught slower and easier than my biggest fish. I can't remember when I caught them, but I remember what they were. The King salmon that Roy and I caught was caught two or three years ago. It was so big that I had to have help cutting it for dry fish. The biggest pike I caught was when I was in either grade school or junior high. I remember that my great grandmother, Roberta Fitka, Mary Fitka and I were fishing together back at Kayakutuk, and that's where I caught it. We used to have a lot of fun fishing when there was a lot of snow back there because after we caught a few fish, Roberta, myself and other children would play in the deep snowdrifts." By: Gail Fitka
