Tayarut - Mare's Tail:TAYARUT - MARE'S TAIL
( HIPPURUS VULGARIS )
During the fall time " Tayarut" (Mare's Tail) are found right on top of the ice of the ponds. We used to scrape them off the ice with kineleks (ulus) or shovels and put them in our Eskimo back packs. In those times we had no gunny sacks. My mom would put them in the sod house in one big pile. Sometimes in the winter, I would go home after school and my mom would boil "Tayarut" (Mare's Tail) with mouse food and especially with tomcod liver and other parts of the fish. This soup is very tasty this way. They don't have this food everyday but every once in awhile. JOAN BELL
