Kavlakuaq - Blackberry (Crowberry):KAVLAKUAQ - Blackberry (Crowberry)
( Empetrum Nigrum )
To store blackberries we put them in the freezer till wintertime. Along about christmas time we have a feast with blackberries and other sorts of food. We eat blackberries with other berries. We also add boiled whitefish to blackberries. After we cook the whitefish we add blackberries and salmonberries to make a delicious akutaq. We can also add tomcod liver to our blackberries for akutaq.

The blackberry is found on the tundra. It is sourer than the other berries, but it is delicious to eat. We eat blackberries in a bowl with milk and sugar. They are very tasty this way. We pick blackberries from the hills and mountains - with grassbaskets. Mothers and younger daughters pick berries from morning to late afternoon or evening. In this way they get ready for wintertime. To make akutaq, we add salmonberries and blackberries with crisco (shortening).
Blackberries are very tasty to fill our empty stomach with during the wintertime.
