Aatunaq - Arctic Dock:AATUNAQ-ARCTIC DOCK
(RUMEX ARCTICA) During the spring when the "aatunaq" is growing, I would pick the young leaves and bring them home in my Yupik Eskimo back pack andI would boil them. Before boiling them, I would cut the "aatunaq" into small pieces, some about aninch long. We have to boil them until the "aatunaq" is realy soft. After boiling them we take them out and cool them. After cooling them I mix the "aatunaq" with akutaq or some blackberries. Before winter we would pick some more "aatunaq", boil them and store them with blackberries in a barrel until it is full. This is so we can have "aatunaq" in winter with our akutaq or with seal oil, sugar and milk. It is very tasty this way. That's the way I cook "aatunaq". Josephine Smart Translated by: Dellamae R.
