A Sore Ride to Pilot Station:A Sore Ride to Pilot Station
One cloudy afternoon I had a VHF call from Liz Fitka. It was around 2:30 p.m. when she called to ask me if I wanted to go to Pilot with her because she had nobody else to bring and she wanted somebody to go with her. At first I was undecided if I should go or not. Then about an hour later Kimberly called on the radio from Pilot and asked me if I was going down. I told her that I'd decided to go down but thought it might be too late to go with her mom. But Liz was on the same channel listening to us and she told me that it wasn't too late. So I got ready and waited for Liz to pick me up. While we were on our way down river it seemed like a long ride because by the time we passed half-way cabin it had already started to get dark outside. Then, because we had problems with the headlight, we had to drive slowly the rest of the way down. When we finally reached Pilot I warmed up a little, then ate supper. Afterward Kim and I went to the gym to watch ball games. To me the ball games were kind of boring and not very exciting. Later when the fiddling started everybody had to clear out of the gym and pay again after already paying to watch the basketball games. Kim and I stayed in the gym for a while then went to check the Dome because people said they were having a dance there. But there were only a few people hanging around, so we went back up to the school. After Jackie came down it wasn't as boring, but there was nothing else to do but stay in the gym and watch the fiddlers play and the dancers dance. While we were at the square dance Jackie and Kim bought some tickets for half-cash, but they were out of luck and didn't win anything, maybe because there were too many people. The day Liz and I went down to Pilot I was very sore from the bumpy ride, so I wasn't ready for the ride back to Marshall. But I was also happy we were coming home and decided to grin and bear it.
