A Busy 1997 Vacation

"Christmas vacation started with the usual community program at the school gym on Christmas Eve. Following the program, Santa arrived and greeted the children. Following that the traditional passing out of gifts was conducted. At 11:30 pm that evening the Catholic mass was held at the new church. Christmas day was normal with the Marshall Fiddlers playing for about three hours. The following Friday and Saturday the Tuluksak band arrived to perform for the people at the school gym. It was fun with mostly local people attending. Life was mostly normal during the last week of December. The City didn't have any activities for New Year's Eve or New Year's Day because of the activities down at Pilot Station. Everyone who could go went down to Pilot Station. The Marshall Fiddlers and Tuluksak band were playing there and they were also having a men's basketball tournament. Life slipped back to normal until Slaaviq started on the 7th of January. Then it was a matter of waiting for the star to arrive at our house to sing and pray with the people. Some families fed the singers and anyone else who came to their house. We chose to pass out chewing gum and let them have some juice. Slaaviq ended with Russian Orthodox New Year's on the 14th of January. Now that all the holidays are over life is back to normal."
