From New Years to Slavi:From New Years to
Slavi
This Christmas break I did a few things, but I mostly stayed home. They had a teen dance and I hung out there to kill the boredom. Christmas week they had a dance five days out of that week, even on Christmas eve and Christmas day. On December 28, the Pilot Station Ladyhawks came to play the Blazers. I didn't think the game was going to be that exciting but I stayed, and the game turned out to be an exciting one. After the ball game I stayed home during the day and went out during the night, patiently waiting for New Year's to arrive. When New Year's Eve came, the Traditional Council, the Race Committee and the Russian Orthodox and Catholic Churches sponsored some activities. The only activity I tried was the turkey shoot. There were three categories to choose from, the .22 pistol, .22 rifle and high powered rifle. I tried the .22 pistol and high powered rifle and placed fourth in both events. I tied with my uncle David. In the high powered category I placed third. But when Richard Ellis tried again, he came in first, which knocked me down to fourth. So I took fourth in both events. That same night I hung out at the fiddle dance for a little while then I went home and slept for about two hours. When I got up it was almost New Year's. I waited around until it was twelve o'clock when I fired off a few rounds with my rifle. Later I went back down to the fiddle dance and then went to the teen dance. When I got down to the city hall some people were lighting fireworks. I stayed at the teen dance until it was over. It wasn't very exciting but some people still danced. On January 1, the same activities were held as the ones the day before. I tried the turkey shoot again but this time I only shot the .22 pistol. After the turkey shoot they had a ball game where the Bobcats beat the Pilot Station Slow Pokes. Again that night I hung out at the teen dance until it was over. From the first of January until school started I hung out with my buddy who came over from Kalskag to watch ball games. The Pilot Station women came up and played again, and the Pitka's Point Dreamers came up and played the Blues and Bobcats. The Dreamers lost both games. I also went down to Pilot Station to watch the Men's Tournament where the Lost Boyz took first place. During Slavi I followed the star a little, and the last couple days I followed it all night round until it quit. Fred Alstrom
