Oxenia Isaac
Health Aide

Oxie was born in Upper Kalskag in 1957. She grew up in Kalskag and also went to school there. She only went to the tenth grade, and she did not go to college.

Oxie has been working at the health clinic on and off since 1981. She plans to work as a health aide until she feels that it is time for her to retire. She likes her job because she likes to make people feel better. She always wanted to work as a nurse in the hospital, but working in the clinic here in Marshall is just as good.

The training she had to have was different kinds of workshops on how to take temperature, blood pressure, and so on. She had four training sessions, and each was once a month for four to six weeks. They received training for Math, ETT (Emergency Treatment Training) and EMT (Emergency Medical Training).

The best part of her job is making people feel better. The worst thing is when she can't do enough for a patient or when she loses a patient or gets the patient to the hospital too late for treatment.

She has a family, which includes five children. Her family doesn't affect her job like it used to when her children were growing up. As they got older, they became used to her being away from home for months at a time. She has less worries now, and things don't bother her as much as they used to when she first started.
