Clara Shorty
Librarian

Clara was born in Bethel, Alaska, in 1957. She grew up in Marshall and only went to school here for her elementary years. She went to the St. Mary's Mission for her high school years and graduated there. She then went to college for a while to be a licensed practical nurse at K.U.C.C.

She started to work here at the school in 1978 and plans to retire when they tell her it's time. She likes her job because she likes to watch the kids learn new things. Clara was first interested in her job because her family was poor and she wanted to help pay her parents' bills. But she also loved to read. Her training included college courses in Algebra, Child Development, English and Library, specifically how to number books on spines and how to classify them.

She looks forward to getting up every day to go to work with her youngest child and to work with the kids.

The best part of her job is when the children are really interested in learning something new. The worst is when kids are really stubborn, don't want to work, and when they call her names. Her family does affect her job performance and she says if she didn't have kids she wouldn't be enthusiastic about her job. Another one is family problems because if someone gets sick it makes it hard for her to concentrate.
