This year there are fewer birds than last spring even though from May to June people said there were a lot of birds on the other side of the mountains even those that were not allowed to be hunted like Canadian geese, White-fronted geese, and the Black brant.

Last spring there were a lot of them, but right now, after the molt there were just a few seen, and a lot less than last year-after there were many of them during the spring time.

But still there are a lot of ducks and mallards seen during the spring, and there were a lot of cranes seen around Black River all summer. Even though there were a lot of them seen in other parts we never saw many on our own land around here. There are usually a lot of swans during the fall time flying around with their young. We don't hunt many swans, but when we do we quit hunting when we've got enough.

Right now since they have the laws we've quit hunting some birds because white people have made laws against shooting them and they are watching them.

A long time ago when I was young there were a lot of geese. There were lots of Emperor geese and the larger Canadian geese in those days. Even though they were hunted they didn't decrease. Nothing happened to them even though they killed a lot of them when they only belonged to us Natives a long time ago when we tried to make them our food. But right now, although we don't hunt them like we used to, they are not increasing. Everything here is decreasing, it seems.

The animals that we hunt or trap here now have limits on them and there are no longer very many left. Because they are made by God, these animals increase each summer then they decrease again by spring. But surprisingly they increase again in the summertime. And every year it used to be that way. But now things have sadly changed. That's all I have to say.
