Caiggluq - Arctic Wormwood:CAIGGLUQ-
ARCTIC WORMWOOD
(Artemisia artica)
The people of Hooper Bay use a Yup'ik Eskimo medicine plant called "Caiggluq". This medicine is strong and works on people who used it to cure or heal sickness in just a few days. When the medicine is boiled and cooled it becomes dark just like tea. Cecilia Olson, who has 7 children, says this plant really worked while they used it to heal their pains. Here is how she uses "caiggluq". She says they drink the dark liquid or rub it on the part of the body that is paining them. She doesn't know when the Yup'ik people started using it,but she said that maybe their ancestors used it a very long time ago. Cecilia Olson.

Camille Boliver:Camille Boliver
Co-op Maintenance Man Camille is a maintenance man and the truck driver for the Fortuna Ledge Co-op store here in Marshall. His boss is Alex Nick. He has been working eight hours a day every day for 17 years, and he expects to work for ten more years. He spends most of his time outdoors. Sometimes you will see him in the store's truck passing by or plowing snow with the snow plower. Four of his job responsibilities are keeping the road and driveway clean, hauling freight, driving the truck and handling the fuel. The best thing about Camille's job,he says, is the money. The worst thing about his job is the management. His advice to the younger people is to stick to the job. If you lose your job, it's hard to get another one.

Camille Boliver:Camille Boliver Camille Boliver was born in Takchak in 1936. He spent half his life there and half his life here. He went to school both at Akularak Mission and here in Marshall. He didn't go to high school because a long time ago they didn't require a high school diploma to get a job. So he just went as far as the 5th grade. Camille has worked at the Co-op Store since 1976 and he says that this year is probably his last year working there. He likes his job because it pays his bills. He was first interested in this job because he needed the money. Camille didn't need any training before he got his job but he needed supervision during his first months and years. He says that his job keeps him stimulated because it keeps him on his feet. He stacks things on the shelves and makes deliveries when Tom isn't there. The best thing about his job is that he gets paid, and the worst is that he has to lift heavy boxes. Rose Lynn Fitka | |
