The main work of the Axe Handle Academy in
Comparative Culture Studies has been carried out through the teaching of
thematic, comparative literature. While there is no intention to
avoid anthropological understanding of culture, the Axe Handle Academy
emphasizes the 'high' culture of both oral and literate sources.
Obvious weaknesses in work to date has been the almost
exclusive emphasis on verbal art and verbal knowledge. We welcome
further development across the entire range of high culture expression
from beadwork to stained glass windows, from chanting to chorales, from
story-knife sketching to art film.
Our most developed comparative literature publication
is Teaching Thematic Comparative
Literature.
