Student
Do's and Do Not's about Parenting

First the
Do's

 

1. Praise your child if (s)he behaves appropriately (but be realistic).

2. Use some form of discipline with your child.

3. If your child misbehaves, make sure (s)he knows exactly what (s)he has done wrong and explain the consequences. Be firm and consistent.

4. Have open communication with your children about subjects such as sex.

5. Always be truthful with children.

6. Be supportive and nurturing--encourage your child's interests.

7. Be a good example for your children.

8. Reassure your children that you love them, even when punishing.

9. Have a sense of humor.

10. Give your child room to be him or herself.

11. Provide your children with a safe and secure environment.

12. Read to your children when they are young.

13. Do things together as much as possible.

 

Then the
Do Not's

 

1. Don't overreact or overdiscipline when your child misbehaves.

2. Don't threaten to withhold your love if your child misbehaves.

3. Don't bribe your children (with money).

4. Don't expect too much of your children (be realistic).

5. Don't ignore your child when (s)he asks for guidance.

6. Don't do things you don't want your children to do.

7. Don't pressure your children too much.

8. Don't overreward good behavior (with too much praise).

9. Don't leave young children unattended.

10. Don't take your own problems out on your children.

11. Don't compare your kids to others.

12. Don't frighten your children with stories about demons, ghosts, etc.
