Bum Luck

Bum Luck

One spring day my friend Dan and I went out goose hunting at Big B. We went early in the morning because it was colder and it would be easier going. It was a cold crisp morning so we warmed up our snow-machines, then we were on our way.The trail was good going but in some spots we broke through the thin layer of ice that froze overnight. We got there about two hours after we left home. As soon as we arrived the birds were already flying around. All day we kept shooting but we only caught three each. I told Dan "I guess it's just bum luck!" When the sun was high in the sky and it got warmer, the birds started to fly high in the sky. They looked like tiny black specks in the great blue yonder, so we decided to head home because we had only a few shells after shooting all day.

On our way home the trail got very bad. "I hope we make it home," Dan said. The trail got worse but it was still fairly good until we came to the slough that flows out of muddy lakes. It had much more water than it had in the morning. I told Dan that we had to speed up to get across the water. I went across the slough like a boat out of hell. Dan who is Mr. Safety himself didn't go as fast as I did and the water slowed him even more and he went under. He drowned his machine! He was standing on his seat looking worried and I started to laugh like hell because it looked so funny.

We pulled his machine out, but by the time we got it going again it started to get cold and a snow storm was closing in on us. I was p.o.'d at Dan because his machine wouldn't stay runnning. So we decided to head for home as fast as we could on my machine. But the storm caught up with us anyway and we couldn't see four feet in front of us. We kept going in the blinding snow storm which seemed like forever. We stopped for awhile by some trees and made a fire and had something to eat, although the whole time I was bitching at Dan. But after awhile we were on our way again.

After two and a half hours of a long bouncy ride we suddenly bumped into something. When we went to check it out we saw that it was a metal post with a chain around it. We followed the chain and found dogs at the end of it. We were behind the village in a dog yard! We looked at each other and said, "We're HOME!!" When we got to my house they were just about to send out a search party for us.
