Alpha and
Beta
Once upon a time there was a male
wolf named Alpha. His mate's name was Beta and she was going to have
her pups in a week. Alpha went to look for a place for his mate
before she gave birth. He traveled about 20 miles east of their home
to visit a close friend. Steward Maple. Steward had helped Alpha and
his family survive since he was a pup. So Alpha went back to his old
home knowing as always that Steward would help his family. Steward
was getting old and Alpha always kept him company. Steward knew,
after a little conversation, that Alpha needed help, and he guessed
that he was going through famine.
Two days later Steward's
grandchildren flew in to see him. They knew how lonely he must be, so
they brought a grey kitten. They chatted with him about how everybody
was doing, then the grandchildren had to go back on the last flight
out. The next day Alpha and Beta came over to Steward's home. Alpha
went under the old shed behind Steward's house, and Beta followed.
Four or five days later Beta had her pups. She had three pups, one
greyish, and the other two were white. Steward soon realized why
Alpha had come to him. He felt a deep down sorrow, and he unpacked
some meat from the outside freezer and later gave it to Alpha
and Beta.
A month later the pups were grown up
enough to be able to play with each other, and they did a lot of
rough housing. Then Steward let them meet Willow, the kitten. The
greyish one liked Willow, so they stuck together like paper and glue.
Steward called the greyish pup, Twig. At first Alpha didn't like the
pup staying with the kitten, but Beta thought it was cute. Willow
tried to stay around Twig as much as he could. They were becoming
good friends.
Five weeks later Steward got really
sick and he had to go to the hospital to have surgery on his heart.
Before he left he told Alpha and Beta to take good care of Willow.
Steward did not come back though, and Alpha knew he never would come
back, so he decided to take care of the kitten for his friend. Alpha
soon learned that Willow wasn't so bad after all. Just a little too
much sometimes.
